Maximalist Interiors: 5 Tips to Achieve Max Design!

Maximalist Interiors

Maximalist interiors take home design to the max in the most elegant way—layering unique patterns, bold color choices, elaborate florals, vintage statement pieces and gorgeous lighting. Think heavyweight printed drapery, moody highly saturated colors, velvet couches, huge floral framed art, dramatic chandeliers, and lots and lots of accessories. These are fun, casually collected spaces brimming with generous layers of fascinating finds and a riot of color joy! Far from boring, we’re excited for this high energy trend and all the possibilities it brings in waking up tired spaces.

Five pro tips to help you nail maximalist interiors at home:

Pattern on Pattern on Pattern

Starting from the ground up to the ceiling, you really can’t have too much pattern in maximalist design. Large square checkered flooring, paired with printed wallpaper walls, patterned drapery, and textured ceiling tiles can all be part of the plan. Florals, pinstripes, plaids, herringbone, damask, oh my! They all fit the bill, along with many more. No worries about clashing either, awkward pattern combinations have a home in maximalist design.

Floral Abundance

Surround yourself with bold botanical prints, sometimes spanning entire walls as floor to ceiling murals. Gilded framed revival floral art is another great option, especially when hung against patterned walls. Dramatic fresh flower arrangements like long twisty spring dogwood branches in an oversized vase are a welcome statement too.

Cue the Color

Energetic color combinations are the foundation of maximalist design. Be bold in your choices, some faves include deep teal, bright magenta, royal blue, sunshine yellow, and emerald green. But really the list is endless, because this aesthetic is all about fun! Contrasting colors like orange and blue create instant vibrancy, while monochromic themes cater to a more relaxed environment. The point is, anything goes! That includes painting trim and window sashes with complementary hues.

Nod to Vintage

Coined “granny chic”, maximalist design embraces the vintage heart for sure. Curated and eclectic in style, we think your nana would be proud of this nostalgic design trend filled with elegant elements from centuries past. Avoid clutter by displaying heirlooms and antique pieces in vignettes or glass china cabinets. Revert to more classic furnishing styles like rolled arm sofas and wrought-iron beds. Include antique framed mirrors and vintage art on the walls to complete the look.

Lavish Lighting

Lighting has a lot of influence in a room, instantly setting the stage for a specific aesthetic. Big or small, be bold with your lighting choices. Maximalist lighting style ranges from elaborate crystal chandeliers to mid-century blown glass pendants—the point is they should be eye-catching and grip the attention of those entering the room. Pro tip, lighting is a smart place to splurge! Chunky colorful table lamps and heavy brass fixtures are another great choice.

Biophilic Design: A Natural Inspiration for Beautiful Living

Biophilic Design

That reviving feeling when you finally arrive at the hidden gem in the woods that you booked months ago to escape the stress and chaos of day-to-day life. Your tired arms plop your bags down, and seconds later you’re feet up facing a wall of windows bathing in warm rays of sunshine through softly blowing branches. Deep exhale, you’re here—destination relaxation! Nature is no doubt a powerful detox.

Good news! You can harness the inspiration nature provides by infusing your own home with biophilic design, creating a permanent staycation.

What is Biophilic Design?

Bio-phil-ic

The human tendency to interact or be closely associated with other forms of life in nature. (Merriam-Webster)

Biophilic design leans on nature, with its hyper-focused and holistic approach to blurring the boundaries between inside and outside the home. Our engagement with the outdoors has proven health benefits including, reduced blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, anxiety and the production of stress hormones. Through an emphasized connection to nature, we can truly live our best life.

What are the Elements of Biophilic Design?

Biophilic Design

Natural Light

Sunshine is one of our favorite design tools, and a best friend of biophilic design too. When you infuse a room with light, you infuse a room with life! If larger windows aren’t an option, consider adding traditional or tube skylights to drive natural light down into a dim room. Tall doors, 8’+, with large window panes or transoms is another option for increasing views to the outside while inviting more natural light in.

Foliage and Flower

Bring the outdoors in with plants. From lush potted foliage to large tropical trees, you can’t have too many plants in biophilic design. Tuck air plants into open shelving or integrate them into living walls with sedums and succulents for a more immersive installation. Add drama to a room with large scale flowering or twiggy branches emerging from a glass vase. Gone are the days of faux plastic ivy creeping around cabinet tops, think of more authentic ways to include plants for a more natural vibe.

Seamless Outdoor Living

Connect the inside and outside in perfect harmony with seamless outdoor living spaces. Soften the flow by creating outdoor spaces that include indoor comforts, like sofa seating, fireplaces, and chandeliers. Large pocket or retracting glass doors are especially effective in fully opening indoor living spaces to the outdoors.

Organic Selections

Natural resources like wood and stone comfort us inside and outside the home. These organic selections provide texture and movement in a space, bringing nature closer. The grains found on wood floors, beams and furnishings, embraces the uniqueness of our natural world, reminding us of the archives within our own lives.

Earth Tones

Resonate peaceful feelings experienced in nature with earth tones in the home—and we’re talking more than neutrals, green is the new grey! Black, white, and terra cotta are other great natural choices. White walls help reflect light around the room, terracotta floor tiles feel familiar to the outdoors, and dark emerald green hues set a forest-like mood as a luxurious accent on wallcoverings or velvet furnishings.

7 Must-Have Design Components of a Great Entryway

Say hello to guests in style with a beautiful entryway into your home. This small space can yield a big wow factor when welcoming visitors. Remodeling your entry can be a low investment way to update the look of your home and make a great first impression—check out our recipe for great entryway design below!

7 Must-Have Design Components of a Great Entryway

Bold Door Design

Nothing sets the mood for your home like the front door. With so many options available, this is a place to spotlight both your home style and personal style. From relaxed organic wood finishes to bold pop colors, be intentional with the tone you set at the doorstep.

You will also need to decide what type of door your opening can support. This will require measuring and consulting with a professional to determine the many possibilities, including side-lights, transoms, door height and width. Think about the street view too, when deciding on glass vs. no glass, and frosted vs. clear panes.

Overhead Light

Fun lighting options fit right into entryway design. Take note of head height in determining what style of lighting to consider; flush mount vs. chandelier, etc. Then think about what you want the welcome to your home to feel like when making lighting selections.  Do you want guests to feel more warm and cozy or bright and lively upon entering?

Add some needed light to your entryway.

Space Defining Rug

Floor rugs are a powerful design tool in establishing both space boundaries and style. Rugs are fairly easy to swap out too if you would like to change your look periodically. Entry rugs can be many different shapes and sizes depending on floor space, and the style and function that you are trying to achieve. If muddy feet often find their way through your door, you may consider a layered entry rug approach with a top rug that can easily be washed.

Welcoming Wall Art

Our favorite place to have fun, wall art! Think punchy wall prints, welcoming framed art, and reflective mirrors to make the entry space feel larger. You can truly show your family’s personality with meaningful wall art selections, and you can swap them out regularly or with the seasons for a more flexible design.

Console Table

The hero of the entryway, the console table. A place to drop your keys, a place for guests to leave their bag. A small console table can add much-appreciated function when stepping inside the door. This is also a nice place to add some decoration, fresh florals, and a lamp for a light welcoming glow.

Fun Wall Finishes

Standout design is achieved through layers, and wall textures are a great way to build in some extra detail. Wainscoting can add texture and durability to entryways. Wallcoverings, from vibrant prints to subtle grasscloths, help stylize and visually separate the entry from other living spaces.

Natural Light

The most vital design tool is powered by the sun, natural light. Harness the uplifting mood of these happy rays by welcoming as much of them as possible into your home. It is amazing how natural light can elevate a design, making a space feel brighter and full of joy while also helping to shine a spotlight on decor and design features.

Key Interior Design Measurements You Should Know When Designing Your Home

Key Interior Design Measurements

Interior design is all about the details, and that includes some key design measurements — like how far the couch should be from the coffee table, and how long pendant lights should hang above the kitchen island. It’s those little details that can make a big difference! We’re here to help you get them right so your design is less awkward and more awe-inspiring.

Key design measurements to master, room by room:

Kitchen measurements
Design by Everything Home Designs | Photography by Sarah Shields

Kitchen

Installing kitchen lights, specifically island lights, merits some measuring attention. First, consider the type and scale of the light fixture that best fits the space. For instance, determine if a see-through design is necessary to keep from blocking views around the room, wall art, or nearby windows. Then select a light fixture in scale with surrounding furnishings.

When it comes to hanging light fixtures above islands, plan on the bottom of pendants or fixtures hitting 30-36” above the surface below. This would be the distance between the top of a countertop or table top to the bottom of the light fixture’s lowest point.

If household members are taller, you may consider raising light fixture bases to 40” above the surface below, to ensure the fixture is not within their line of sight. However, If ceilings are lower than 9’ it could look awkward to raise lighting higher. In these circumstances, consider smaller fixtures, with a more linear or horizontal design. If multiple fixtures are to be hung, aim for 24” between pendants.

Living Room measurements
Design by Everything Home Designs | Photography by Sarah Shields

Living Rooms

If you’ve ever knocked your knee on the coffee table getting up from the couch, then you know design measurements matter! Comfortable furniture placement requires ample walking space. Furnishings should ideally be placed at least 36” apart to allow for good flow. However, nested furnishings may require less distance, like 12-18” between the edge of a couch or chair and coffee table. High traffic areas, like areas between the back of a couch and kitchen islands, usually require a minimum of 5’ distance to achieve a comfortable walking path.

Dining Room measurements
Design by Everything Home Designs | Photography by Sarah Shields

Dining Room

The same rules apply for dining tables as kitchen islands, with dining table lights recommended to be hung 30-36” above the table. Longer rectangular or oval dining tables are best supported with linear horizontal lights as opposed to more traditional chandelier style lights often used over round tables. Dining tables over 8’ in length may require multiple fixtures for good lighting. If tables have leaves that are removed when not entertaining, consider more flexible lighting options.

As a rule of thumb, leave 36” between the end of a dining table and wall, and at least 24” for dining chairs to be pushed back. A distance of 18” is ample for end chairs. Also check the legs on chairs under the table to make sure they fit appropriately and are not hitting other chairs or table legs when moving. A 48” round table generally sits 5-6 people, while a 60” round table best fits 7-8 people.

Bathroom measurements
Design by Everything Home Designs | Photography by Sarah Shields

Bathroom

Bathrooms are busy zones before heading out the door in the morning. Extra walking space and double sinks can help with the hectic-ness of multiple people using one small room at the same time. At least 6’ of wall space is necessary to support a double sink, 8’ is even better if you’re designing a more spacious master bath.

Similarly, walk-in showers are most comfortable when they are around 5’x5’ or larger in size. Also, keep towel bars in mind when measuring. Towel bars are typically hung between 42-48” off the ground. Be sure they are not hung behind doors where they could rub, and not too close to a window or mirror where they could block a view once towels are hung.

From key measurements to major renovation, our team is here to help with flexible design services—allowing you to gain the experience of a professional interior designer, specific to your project needs and budget. Contact us today to set up your initial consultation, and let’s get measuring!

Retro Selections

We’re throwing it back to the ’70s with moss greens, burnt oranges, vintage statement pieces, and retro wallpapers and art. Nostalgic floor patterns like herringbone hardwoods and vintage-printed tiles are trending too. Matte metals, soft-curved velvet furniture pieces, and reeded cabinetry are also making a strong come-back—and we’re all about it!

Biophilic Design

Biophilic design celebrates a better connection to the natural environment by intentionally styling a space to echo peace and tranquility found in nature. This involves blurring the boundaries inside and outside of the home by immersing a design in elements reflected in the natural world—like sunlight, live plants, fresh air, and organic shapes.

Plaster and Stucco

This is not plaster and stucco’s first time trending, it’s truly a timeless treasure! From Old-World stucco finishes mixed into exterior facades to lightly textured walls and smooth stucco range hood covers, we adore this European-inspired style.

Why relocate, when you can renovate? Stylish aging in place is growing in popularity, especially as home purchase prices have surged. Staying put and refreshing where memories, friends, and roots are established is often a much more comfortable and affordable option than re-building, leaving room in a homeowner’s budget for other goals.

Mudroom Faves: Most-Loved Mudroom Designs

Durable Mudroom Surfaces

Mudrooms are usually the first room to greet you when you come home from a busy day. Having an organized and efficient space for stashing shoes, hanging bags, catching coats, dropping mail, and charging electronics when you walk in just makes life easier—and a beautiful design makes it even better!

So what did it take to design our most-loved mudrooms? Explore our favorite mudroom designs and features below:

Drop Zone

You finally made it home, and now it’s time to unload the car. Hands full, you bust through the door hugging an armful of groceries, mail wedged between your fingers, and your car bag sliding off your shoulder. Wouldn’t it be nice to have somewhere to drop all those things right inside the door so you can get your shoes off before settling into those warm house slippers you’ve been dreaming of all day?

You’re not alone, hence the mudroom drop zone! This workhorse feature is often built-in with hooks for bags and coats, a bench for dropping bags or sitting to slide off shoes. Mail bins and key cabinets also make the list! You get the point, it’s pretty much your best friend when you come in the door.

Mudroom Drop Zone Mudroom designs

Smart Storage

The mudroom is a popular pit stop, stocked with all the essentials whether you’re coming or going. It’s a busy place and storage is key to keeping it organized. From cubbies to lockers, closets to cabinets, well-planned storage helps conceal the mess life on the go can sometimes make. And we all know the time-saving benefits of having a designated place for all the daily “things”!

Smart Mudroom Storage Smart Mudroom Storage

Charging Stations

Nothing like reaching for a device and not having the charge to complete the task at hand. Integrating charging stations into the mudroom can save those headaches. You can eliminate countertop clutter with docking drawers which add power outlets into cabinet drawer systems. Life hacks like this save you from running around the house last minute looking for lost devices too.

Mudroom Charging Station

Durable Surfaces

Hard-working spaces call for hard-working materials. We’re talking wainscoting and shiplap on the walls, tile or luxury vinyl plank on the floor, and solid surface countertops. Think durability when making mudroom selections, these rooms can take a beating.

Durable Mudroom Surfaces Durable Mudroom Surfaces

Shared Spaces

Mudrooms usually include an entry from either the garage or exterior, since they are most commonly the family entry to the home. Design these spaces in a way that allows for a natural flow. Mudrooms are sometimes shared spaces with laundry rooms and desk spaces too, adding in a pocket or sliding barn-door feature can help separate uses or conceal these working rooms from adjacent living spaces. And if you don’t have room for a whole room, you may consider transforming a back hallway entry into a mud “room” with creative design.

Mudroom Shared Spaces Mudroom Shared Spaces

Inspiration

Mudrooms don’t have to be all work and no play—have a favorite quote to start your day, this is the perfect place to showcase it! You’re sure to see inspirational messages, to-do lists, and calendars when they’re displayed in this main passage to and from the home.

Tile Style: Tips and Inspiration for Using Tile in Your Home

Beautiful tile for a shower

The history of tile dates back to the earliest civilizations, and thousands of years later we’re still using it due to its exceptional durability and design quality. Making its way into almost every dwelling, tile in its many forms is arguably one of the most versatile building products around with flexible applications both inside and outside the home. Long-lasting, easy to maintain, and super fun to style with—tile is a treasured design tool!

Types of tile, best uses, inspiration, and pattern mixing… we’re covering it all below:

Tile Types and Applications

Material: Ceramic

Applications: Ceramic tile is most often used in kitchens, bathrooms, foyers, and mudrooms but it is recommended for any high traffic areas in the home. It is widely versatile and best known for its durability. Ceramic tile is rated from 0 to 5 based on strength; tile rated 0-2 is most appropriate for wall tile (including bath/showers), while 3 is better suited for floor uses. For commercial installations, seek tile with ratings of 4-5.

Material: Porcelain

Applications: Porcelain tile is a type of ceramic tile, sharing the same desirable qualities. Porcelain, however, is noted for being stronger than other ceramics and more water resistant; making it a better choice for bath/showers and outdoor applications.

Material: Natural Stone

Applications: Think slate, marble, and travertine—natural stone tiles are often associated with luxury. These regal terrestrial selections can be a little more expensive, but very timeless and organic in appeal. Natural stone tiles are often used for entry and bathroom floors. Some types may require a sealer to minimize wear and repel stains.

Material: Cement

Applications: Highly decorative tiles, with geometric prints on the surface for instance, tend to be cement. Cement tiles are made of concrete using a handmade process.  They are very durable, with the ability to outlast ceramics if properly cared for which includes using a sealant to protect the surface. Be prepared, the surface may also patina over time. Cement tiles are most popularly used for decorative floors, shower accents, backsplashes, and fireplace surrounds.

Material: Glass

Applications: Glass tiles are durable with a unique glossy transparent surface compared to most other tiles. Appropriate applications include bath/shower walls, backsplashes, decorative wall art, mosaics, and even swimming pools! However glass tiles are not always suitable for floor tile, unless their surface is textured to prevent slippage.

Use Pattern Like a Pro

Tile installations range from simple stacked or symmetric designs, to brick-like subway installations, to mosaic murals, and everything in between! You know what that means? There are no strict tile rules! Which is great, because that leaves more room for creativity and fun.

Simple stacked tile is a timeless approach that we’ll never break up with, but some of our favorite tile installations include a clever mix of patterns playfully complementing each other. If you’re thinking of mixing tile patterns, aim to pair a bold choice with a background choice. Bold choices might include tiles with some print on them, like vintage or mosaic patterns, while background choices are more simply stated like standard subway tile. This intentional combination creates visual energy, with the highly patterned bold tile punctuating the subtle background tile selection.

High Style Tile

Other fun style applications include using uniquely shaped tiles like hexagon or installing tiles in a herringbone or basket weave formation. Showcasing a custom rug-like design at the entry or in the master bath is another standout way to use tile. Bold color choices are a fun way to make a statement too, like emerald green or ocean blue.

For a more relaxed aesthetic opt for a wabi sabi tile style. Celebrating the organic qualities of nature, the handmade craftsmen trend of wabi sabi tile welcomes imperfections with irregular textures and hand-painted brushy patterns. What wabi sabi tile lacks in consistency it more than makes up for in charm.

Grout Inspo

Grout also plays a key role in defining tile style. It can be surprising what a difference grout size and color can make to the overall look. Large format rectangular tile keeps the emphasis on tile, while smaller tile surfaces require more grout to be used. If you’re after a subtle solid surface style, choose a grout with a similar color to your tile. For a more bold design, use a contrasting grout color. Evaluate the width of grout lines too when deciding how expressive you want your tile grout to be.

Our designs are about style as much as durability—so you’ve probably noticed tile is a staple in our work. We’d love to chat about your next tile project, from simple bath surround to elaborate floor projects, we can help bring your design dreams to life. Click here to get started!

Designing Spaces for Teens

Spaces for Teens Featured Image

If you have a teenager at home, you already know they have their own wants and wishes when it comes to space design. Having their own place to hang out with friends, whether it be in-person or connected virtually, is usually top priority! A space for hosting impromptu sleepovers, homework sessions, and plenty of storage also make the list—and privacy ranks high of course too.

5 Space Design Considerations for Teens:

Spacious Sleeping

Spacious Sleeping Spaces

A spacious bed to stretch their growing legs is a teen room must. This might be the time to bump up that twin bed to a double or queen depending on the size of their room. You will still want to leave plenty of extra space for other activities. Including an extra sleep space for overnight guests, like a trundle or fold-out sofa, is a nice touch too.

Lounge Area

A Fun Place to Lounge

Lounging with friends is the highlight of the teen years for many. Well-designed home lounge spaces provide a safe, semi-private, place for teens to kick back with friends. Cozy floor cushions, cushy bean bags, and comfy chaise chairs are all great furnishings to consider. Swing chairs are also a fun addition, but require special ceiling mounting.

Games, television, and audio speakers all help to keep teens entertained and happy too. Bold colors, pop prints, fun art, and twinkle lights are some favored decor options. And don’t forget to include a mini snack bar and beverage fridge in the design if you want to see big smiles. Basements, spare bedrooms, and dens are excellent locations for building a relaxing, yet exciting, teen lounge space at home.

Homework and Creative Zone

A Creative Study Space

Teens won’t necessarily ask for a homework zone, but you may find having a dedicated space for it helpful in keeping them focused and on task. This could simply be a desk or table top for their computer with extra workspace for written work. A comfy desk chair always helps too! Include storage for paper, pens, pencils, etc. This zone can double as a creative space for crafts or other hobbies too. Quiet closet nooks, corner pockets and loft spaces are all ideal locations for teens to work away from busy areas in the home.

Flexible Storage

Stuff, lots of stuff! Teenagers can accumulate a lot of personal belongings in their rooms as they age, many of which are hard for them to part with. Toys, clothes, books, awards, photos and more—little by little it really adds up and can feel overwhelming when you enter their space. Incorporate flexible storage options like bins, cubbies, shelves, and pin boards that can change as their storage style and needs change over time.

Staying Connected

Creating Connected Spaces for Teens

Communicating with friends and family outside of the house is important to a lot of teenagers. Think about tech needs when designing spaces for teens. This could include ample wi-fi coverage throughout teen spaces for various devices including phones, computers, and game consoles depending on their interests and equipment. Electrical outlets with built-in USB charging ports are also much-appreciated by teens.

No matter the need, we can help design the perfect space! Contact us to get started designing zones that will have your teenager hanging at home, and loving it.

Happy Home. Happy Life.

8 Ways to Make Your Home Feel Custom and Unique

Make Your Home Feel Custom

You know the difference — when you walk into a home and the space feels like a simple welcome versus a WOWcome! Wow factor is rooted in intentional design and impressive final touches. Designs layered with details are the ones that feel the most special and unique.

Here are 8 eye-catching ways to make your home feel custom:

  1. Embellished Ceilings

Have you ever walked into a room and found yourself immediately looking up? It’s a clever way to experience a space—which explains why decorative ceilings are getting lots of pins and likes online these days! Dramatic ceiling details like vaulted beams, tray ceilings, and arched hallways move your eye upwards when entering a room, making the space appear larger and definitely more exciting.

  1. Luxe Lighting

You no longer have to break the bank to get luxury looks when it comes to lighting, with more selections than ever available at various price points and in a wide range of finishes. Lighting can change the whole vibe of a space with fixtures fitting an abundance of aesthetics, like farmhouse, mid-century modern, traditional, etc. For minimal investment, lighting selections can have a high impact when it comes to transforming a room.

  1. Hardware Upgrade

If you’re looking for a quick custom style upgrade, consider ways to elevate door and cabinet hardware. Similar to lighting, unique selections are widely available to fit any aesthetic and budget. Investing in specialty hardware is an affordable way to personalize a space and make your home feel custom.

  1. Mudroom Makeover

If laundry day is your least favorite day of the week, you’re certainly not alone! Done up mudrooms and laundry spaces are increasingly popular in an effort to make household tasks and daily chores more manageable. Cabinets, cubbies, dog wash stations, custom coat trees, locker storage systems, and mail desks are all things to consider in building a fully custom “hub of the home” mudroom experience.

  1. Wall Treatment

Striking wallpapers and wall textures like shiplap, tile, and faux brick all help to make a space feel special. Whether it is an accent wall or whole room, wall treatments are visually exciting, adding unique texture and depth to a design.

  1. Custom Furnishings

Well-designed cabinetry and built-in shelving opportunities are an important consideration in planning a custom home renovation or build. From fireplace surrounds to media walls, kitchens to home office storage—custom cabinetry and shelving is both beautiful and useful. The 1,2,3’s of Pattern Mixing

Pattern mixing featured image

Swiss dots, boho florals, Japanese paperweave, traditional plaid and paisley—pattern brings eclectic energy to design. From subtle natural marble veins and soft organic wood grain, to bold botanical textiles and standout geometric wall coverings, you can harness unmatched design power using patterns. Use this unique design tool to sharply influence the overall style and vibe of a space. Design aesthetics (minimalist, maximalist, abstract, art deco, etc) all rely on patterns to tell their story. Layering a mix of patterns into a design can create even more visual excitement!

There really are no rules when it comes to mixing patterns, but here are a few tips to help you mix like a pro:

Coordinate Colors

  1. Coordinate Colors

Keep your pattern mixing in check by coordinating a color palette. Make selections according to your color preferences and overall style goals. If you’re aiming to create a high-energy space, consider mixing patterns with complementary colors (opposite each other on the color wheel). For a simple relaxed look, stick to a more monochromatic (similar) color scheme when selecting patterns. Color choices have a big impact on the way a room feels, so deciding if you’re aiming for calm and quiet, vibrant and loud, or maybe somewhere in between is a great first step.

Size It Up

  1. Size It Up

Pattern mixing unfortunately falls flat when all of the elements within the pattern design are similar in size. Varying pattern sizes makes the design more interesting, and more exciting to the eye. High impact pattern combos include pairing slender long pin stripes with big bold florals, thick buffalo check with tight natural woodgrain, and large modern shapes with a light linen look.

Blend and Balance

  1. Blend and Balance

Your favorite pattern should definitely be your anchor pattern in a room. Spotlight this pattern as upholstery on furniture, a wall covering, or maybe a floor rug. Basically go big with the pattern you like the best! From there, carefully distribute pattern weight throughout the space. Make sure bold patterns are more sprinkled than clustered, using subtle patterns to create buffer zones in between, bringing about a balanced, blended look.

6 Smart Kitchen Storage Solutions

Kitchen Storage Featured Image

You know that feeling of defeat, elbow deep in the utensil drawer, looking for that lost ladle? Or the fuming aggravation when you’re 15 minutes in, rummaging through every cabinet, and you still can’t locate that tiny Tupperware lid? Well-planned kitchen storage can help you avoid these very valid frustrations!

An efficient kitchen starts with smart storage. Having a designated place for everything is essential but sometimes hard to do if you have a lot of unnecessary items to find space for. Start by purging all those extras and gadgets you haven’t touched in years to refine your storage needs, then begin thinking about the best storage options for your remaining must-have items.

We’re sharing our fav kitchen storage solutions to get you started:

  1. Cabinet Inserts

Kitchen cabinets continue to evolve, with seemingly unlimited storage options available. Pull-out drawers with full separator inserts to section off and organize items like cutlery, cooking utensils, and linens remains a favorite splurge. Peg-like inserts can also be integrated into drawers to keep pots, pans, and dishware organized and in place when opening drawers. Specialty inserts for holding spice jars and utensil caddies are also a handy helper, as are cabinet risers for keeping cups and mugs in view.

Open Shelving

  1. Open Shelving

Easily accessible open shelving is a great way to keep kitchenware close, especially if you enjoy looking at your collection. Reserve this space for your most-used dinnerware like cups, mugs, plates, and bowls. Attractive staple appliances like coffee presses, toasters, and teapots may also find a welcome place on open shelves. It’s also a great area to display beautiful dinnerware and beloved cookbooks. Open shelving doesn’t have to be expansive if you’re worried about dust, with clever design it can be designed to fill awkward angles and small nooks in the kitchen too.

Cubbies and Containers

  1. Cubbies and Containers

It’s hard to talk about storage and not mention cubbies and containers…because they’re essential! Sectioning off storage space with physical barriers is helpful when it comes to keeping things orderly, and built-in cubbies allow you to easily achieve this. They create micro-storage within a design, so things can be categorized and organized better. Add in some containers and you can make cubby storage even more efficient. Think about zones like the pantry, kitchen island, shelving, etc. that you can integrate cubbies and containers into for stashing away your kitchen goods by type. Decide on a common aesthetic when designing cubbies and selecting storage containers like bins, baskets, and jars to connect the overall kitchen design.

Breakfast/Beverage Bar

  1. Breakfast/Beverage Bar

You may be noticing a common theme in modern kitchen design, breakfast and beverage bars are definitely a thing now—and it’s here to stay. That’s because it just makes sense, even in a small space. Designating a place for grab-n-go breakfast items and beverage service in the kitchen helps get your day off to a good start, and it’s equally convenient for evening cocktails too. This is a great place to store breakfast bars, cereal, whole fruits, coffee, and tea to start your morning routine off stress-free. You may also include a mini fridge with drinks and bar items for happy hour later.

Multi-Purpose Islands

Kitchen islands are the workhorse of the kitchen—with functionality from seating to storage, and dishwashing to displaying your dinner spread. Custom islands especially pack a lot of punch when designed to maximize function within the space. Investing in a custom island feature with multiple purposes, over simple stock options, can dramatically increase storage space. Kitchen islands built with cabinet bases often provide the most options for storage, like pull-out drawers and integrated shelving. Couple that with an expansive countertop for cooking and seating for guests, and a kitchen island can be a real design hero!
