Tidy Up! Designing a Functional, Organized Laundry Room

Oh laundry day, understandably not most people’s favorite day of the week! It can be an intimidating task whether you try to knock it out in one day or spread it out over several—because before you fold that last pair of pants, it’s often time to start all over again. Life just keeps making laundry but you can wash away your frustrations around this pesky chore with smart work space design. A functional laundry room can make washing, drying, and folding a breeze so you have more time for the fun stuff!

Must-haves that just might turn your laundry space into a favorite place:

Natural Light

Sunshine makes everything better, right? It’s a lot easier to find inspiration for a dreaded chore like laundry with sunshine filling the room, so definitely let the light in! Aim to welcome as much natural light in as possible when designing laundry spaces. Live plants love natural light too, and similarly help to lift the mood when added to a work room.

Wash Sink

A deep, large, wash sink for scrubbing and soaking is a definite must-have in the laundry room. This powerhouse feature truly has endless uses, from light washing of delicate clothes to scrubbing muddy boots. You may also consider adding an additional sink or shower pan with tile backsplash for washing your pets. Retractable sprayer faucets sure make rinsing, and life in the laundry room easier too!

Drying Rack

A folding rack or hanging rod for air-drying delicate clothing is a staple in the laundry room. Not all fabrics can handle mechanical drying, so it is important to also consider an area to dry garments gently. Retractable wall racks for laying pieces flat that stretch when hung vertical, or built-in rods for clothing on hangers, both work well. Drying times vary depending on fabrics so you will want racks and rods mounted in an inconspicuous, out of the way, place in case items need several days to fully dry.

Plenty of folding space

Folding Counter

Folding clothing right in the laundry room really is the best bet for keeping oneself accountable and wrapping up this chore quickly. Laundry folding counters can be stand alone tables, countertops mounted above front-loading washers and dryers or rolling clothing bins, or counters on top of base storage cabinets. Keep in mind that a comfortable counter height for folding is around 30” when planning folding zones.

A storage-centric laundry room

Storage Spaces

Detergent, spot-remover, bleach, starch, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, oh my! There are lots of supplies to keep track of in the laundry room, so functional storage design must be considered. Closed cabinetry helps keep smaller items orderly, while open-shelving is a great option for stowing larger laundry baskets and totes. Additionally, tiered rolling supply carts can be used to keep things organized and within reach. Laundry rooms are also a great place to store household cleaners, brooms, mops, and more.

Ironing Board

If you love a crisp pleat or starched seam, then planning a place to iron is an important part of your design. In lieu of standard folding ironing boards, which can take up a lot of space, you can opt for a compact countertop ironing board that can be stored in a cabinet when not in use. Half-size folding ironing boards that hang on the back of the door are also an option, as well as folding ironing board wall cabinets with a built-in electrical plug and extra space for storing the iron.

Sorting bins

Sorting and Socks

A designated place to sort delicates, colors, etc. definitely helps keep laundry running smoothly, especially if you are washing over multiple days. Rolling bins and totes are great helpers when it comes to separating garments. Having a “sock box” on hand for stashing lost socks awaiting their match in between loads is helpful too.

A mixed-use laundry room

Mixed Use

The laundry room is a busy place! Mixed-use laundry and mudroom spaces make a lot of sense if the room is in close proximity to the garage and/or kitchen. Laundry rooms can also serve as the welcome center of the home depending on location. You may consider adding a drop zone for mail, keys, coats, and/or charging stations for phones and laptops. If large enough, a laundry room may also accommodate a family desk or a makerspace for arts and crafts.

Taking the Stress Out of Home Design: 6 Things Interior Designers Handle So You Don’t Have To

Virtual Interior Design Services Indianapolis

Interior designers are most recognized for their smart space design and savvy selections which help shape enhanced ways of living—but underneath the finished product is another valuable layer, one that supports the human experience on an even deeper level.

Interior designers handle a lot of details (and problem-solving!) so the client doesn’t have to. This behind-the-scenes work is critical in creating the best space utilization possible while designing awe-inspiring interiors. Working with an interior designer allows you to tap into years of specialized experience from clever design visioning processes to professional project management. Plus you get exclusive access to vetted tradespeople, vendors, and products!

There are a lot of valuable advantages to working with an interior designer, here are 6 things a designer handles so you don’t have to:

Design Discovery

Interior designers are kind of like design psychologists—arriving unbiased with fresh eyes and a series of questions to help better understand your needs, wants, likes, and dislikes. Designers also want to know how you like to live in your space and what inspires you most. By digging deep, a designer is able to discover unique opportunities for improvement and elevated living within the space. This takes pressure off of the client to come up with design solutions and a vision.

Budget Planning

Budget is the backbone of every design project, that’s why “What’s your budget?” is an early question when meeting with clients. Experienced designers help clients to realize what is possible within their budget, where they can save, what is worth splurging on, etc. Even with the best planning, surprise costs can happen, but interior designers handle making adjustments as necessary along the way to ensure a design stays within a designated budget.

Project Management

One of the biggest perks of working with an interior designer at Everything Home Designs is benefitting from our project management skills, including our handling of the project timeline and all the other moving parts too. Designers meet with contractors and vendors saving our client’s time, energy, and often aggravation. They set project schedules and make alterations to the work calendar when necessary to keep things running smoothly.

Contract Craftsmen

Custom design is rooted in a designer’s “Rolodex” of tried and true top-notch craftsmen and contractors. These relationships are built and perfected over years of working together. Building trustworthy working relationships with carpenters, cabinet makers, countertop installers, flooring specialists, plumbers, electricians, etc. is another piece of the puzzle that interior designers handle for their clients. When you work with an interior designer you gain access to their invaluable list of go-to contractors so you don’t have to start from scratch.

Sourcing Selections

Interior designers are known for their artistic eye and keen sense of style, which is dependent on sourcing furniture, textiles, art, etc. to match their vision. They are pros at knowing what products are available and where to get what they need…and when a piece is nowhere to be found, designers know just who to call for a custom commission piece. Interior designers handle sourcing all selections and even display samples for the client so visiting a bunch of showrooms to get a sneak peek isn’t necessary.

Our designers arrange for product delivery, storage, and staging in-house of all furnishings. The job is not done until all of the boxes and bubble wrap are removed from the site. Grandmillennial Style: A Fresh Take on the Familiar

Grandmillennial Design

Grandmillennial style feels like a cozy visit to grandma’s house but with a touch of modern millennial flair. Inspired by nostalgia, up-cycling, and quirky interior design of the past, millennials are reinventing “granny chic” with a fresh, fun, and full of personality spin on traditional decor. This playful aesthetic is supported by a tasteful mix of print, pattern, wicker, cane, tassels, pleats and fringe—ranging from Victorian vintage to preppy-classic in look.

6 Ways to Incorporate Grandmillennial Style Into Your Design:

Layer Patterns

Florally things are a Grandmillennial must—from flower-adorned wallpaper patterns to chintz-printed textiles. Toile and traditional geometric patterns are also favorites. Mixing patterns is celebrated (and there really is no limit!) so go ahead layer on classically fun prints. Pillows, bedding, drapery, rugs, wall coverings and wall art are all places to incorporate vintage-inspired patterns.

Fill Up on Frills

Texture, texture, texture! We’re talking all the frills…tassels, fringe, ruffles, scallops and pleats. Grandmillennial doesn’t shy away from the fancy stuff, incorporating traditional (sometimes lavish) adornments into a relaxed eclectic style for an elevated luxe yet comfy feel. Drapery, lamp shades, bed linens, furniture, etc. — there are plenty of opportunities to get your frill fill.

Mix Vintage Metals

Brass and silver-plated furnishings are a perfect complement to Grandmillennial style. Metallic furnishings add something shiny and visually interesting to a space. Ornate photo frames, antique scroll mirrors, gilded lamps, crystal embellished chandeliers, trophy vases, and metallic figurines are all stylish additions.

Update Traditional Furnishings

Slipcovers and reupholstery are both Grandmillenniall-friendly. Elevate classic dining chairs with a beautiful pleated linen or vintage printed slipcover. Reupholster tired Queen Anne accent chair fabrics with an eye-catching velvet or floral print for a fun furniture facelift.

Balance with Wood

With color and pattern at the forefront of Grandmillennial design, it is important to balance this bold style with softer natural wood features. Mixing vintage-inspired rattan, wicker, and cane furniture pieces adds an organic feel to the space. Wood sofa legs and full furniture pieces like antique armoires and end tables also does the trick.

Play with Color

Grandmillennial color palettes range from monochromatic to more often bold, sometimes intentionally awkward, contrasting hues—like orange and lavender, scarlet and powder blue, emerald and dusty pink. Decide what vibe you want for the space and plan colors accordingly. Use brilliant shades or sharp color contrasts to increase energy and subtle or single monochromatic colors to create a relaxing mood.

Our eclectic design team is here to help you up-cycle outdated traditional pieces into hip Grandmillennial style, contact us today to get started!

What “Wood” Look Good? Considerations When Selecting Wood Finishes

Wood Finishes Featured Image

Wood adds unparalleled visual interest to a space with its organic texture and tones—making it a favorite natural design element! Selecting wood finishes and features for your home can seem like a daunting task with all of the unique options available. Wood floors and furnishings are especially long-lived design elements in a home too, making it extra hard to lock into a single species or stain.

Don’t fret, mixing and matching wood tones is just as cool as mixing and matching metals these days! A designer can help you establish an eclectic wood theme with everlasting appeal.

5 Things Designers Consider When Selecting Wood Finishes:

Considerations When Selecting Wood Finishes
Interior Design: Everything Home Designs | Builder: Old Town Design Group | Photo Credit: Sarah Shields

Evaluate Your Design for Opportunity

Wood is a very versatile design element with flexible applications across design aesthetics, plus there is no better way to bring the outdoors in!  Evaluate the draft design of a space for opportunities to include wood furnishings—from floors, furniture, and frames to cabinets, decor and more. Then finalize which wood elements are best suited for the space, giving careful consideration to a balanced distribution of wood weight around the room.

Considerations When Selecting Wood Finishes

Establish a Dominant Wood Tone

After evaluating what surfaces in your design will be wood, the next step is to establish a dominant tone. The dominant wood tone selection should be both a reflection of your home’s aesthetic and personal style preferences. This selection should be applied to the largest surface in the room, like wood floors, wood fireplace surrounds, sizable dining tables, etc.

Considerations When Selecting Wood Finishes
Interior Design: Everything Home Designs | Photo Credit: Sarah Shields

Use Complementary Undertones

Once a dominant wood tone is selected, consider complementary undertones to use. When layering design details, matching or even coming as close as possible to matching the dominant tone, is not necessary. Complementary tones will actually highlight the dominant tone better than a match. The tones of wood finishes are often broken down into cool (grey or beige) or warm (yellow, orange or red) color families. Sticking to wood selections in the same color tone family will help bring unity to a design without worrying about an exact match, and it is more visually exciting too!

Considerations When Selecting Wood Finishes

Consider Contrasting Tones and Textures

If you want to liven things up and create visual excitement, embrace a contrasting mix of wood tones and textures. A combination of light ash wood floors and dark walnut wood furnishings is a perfect example of how contrasting wood colors can make an eye-catching design statement. To elevate energy in a space, consider the unique textures available in wood products too, from rustic barn wood to smooth maple. Species specific wood grain selections, like heart pine or tiger oak, can also increase the visual interest of wood finishes in a design. A clever appointment of wood tones and textures can turn a simple design into a work of art.

Considerations When Selecting Wood Finishes

Support Transitions with Textiles

Wood on wood on wood is too much, even for wood’s biggest fan! Textiles, like fabric furniture, window drapery, and floor rugs, all help to support space between wood features in a room. Side-by-side wood blends together, create design transitions with textiles to emphasize individual wood elements for maximum design impact.

Contact us to gain the eye of a seasoned designer when incorporating wood elements into your space! Whether you’re starting from scratch or trying to mix pre-owned wood furnishings with new design elements, we’re here to help with our flexible design services.

5 Inspiring Principles of Japandi Design

Japandi Design

What happens when you combine Japanese + Scandinavian design? Meet Japandi!

Japandi is a trending design style that blends the functionality of Scandinavian design with the mindfulness of Japanese design — all with a common theme of modern minimalism. This hybrid aesthetic is often expressed through a harmonious use of clean lines, bright light, tranquil colors, sustainable furnishings, and plenty of natural touches.

Japandi design yields max “hygge-zen” vibes fostering a cherished design purpose — that the core of one’s well-being is shaped by the environment that they live in.

If your vision board is overflowing with Scandinavian and Japanese influenced interiors, then this dynamic design duo is definitely something to explore.

Clutter-Free and Practical

While it can be a painful process at the start, the end result is always very positive — decluttering provides a clean slate for fresh opportunity. Japandi design embraces the notion that “less is more” and that empty spaces in a room are indeed filled with purpose. Blank space allows the eye to relax, while bringing more attention to planned pieces in the periphery. Japandi incorporates the Scandinavian design theory that each piece of the design should support a practical function-driven space. Sleek smart storage, from built-ins to baskets, are essential in achieving this effect.

Skilled Sustainable Furnishings

Longevity is a guiding virtue in Japandi design — and quality counts! Scandinavian and Japanese design both value traditional craftsmanship and high-skill craft pieces that are built with integrity. Merge that with Japandi’s sustainable mindset by investing in artisan-quality furnishings made from sustainable materials. Bamboo and reclaimed woods are popularly used for both durability and environmental friendliness.

Light, Bright and a Touch of Bold

Light, a beacon of peaceful feelings, is prominent in both Scandinavian and Japanese design. You will notice the serenity of both natural light and light color palettes are intrinsic to Japandi design. Think big floor to ceiling windows, welcoming sun therapy dawn til dusk, and Scandinavian design inspired neutral paint palettes with lots of light reflecting white. Finish the space off with accents of carefully placed Japanese design influenced bold color pops, for instant Japandi atmosphere.

Natural Accents and Textures

The outdoors is a common theme too — from lush live plants in simple concrete planters to wooly fibers, woven textiles and lots and lots of natural wood look. Pair landscape and floral inspired Japanese design with a theme of rustic minimalist Scandinavian design for hints of Japandi style. Organic textures are a key design element in Japandi’s aim to unify qualities of outdoor and indoor living. Light hues of grasscloth wall coverings paired with unfinished birch and bamboo crafted furnishings all come to mind.

Clean Lines and Calming Vibes

Simplicity is innately calming, so it makes sense that clean lines are paramount in providing a calming space. Japandi technique fuses simple informal design lines with cozy hygge-like (the quality of being present, comfortable and charmed by simple pleasure) feels to create eclectic spaces that reflect a balance of uniquely minimalist Japanese and Scandinavian cultures.

Loving Japandi design style, but need experienced help incorporating this hybrid look into your home? Let’s do it together, contact Everything Home to get the convo started!

Of Hearth and Home: Ideas for Timeless Fireplace Design

Timeless fireplace featured image

Hearths are the heart of a home, radiating warmth and light throughout a space. Fireplaces come in many shapes, sizes and kinds—all with the common theme of cozy. Highlight this architectural focal point in your house and add some snuggly vibes too. Don’t be afraid to splurge on this lasting feature — invest in fireplace design that will stand the test of time.

Set the tone for your new home or transform a tired space with a timeless fireplace design:

Center Stage

Make a statement with a fireplace that can be admired from multiple sides and elevate your design opportunity. If you are charmed by the idea of gathering around a warm hearth with family and friends, consider clever placement. Double-sided fireplaces with views from both the kitchen and living room or living room and back porch provide maximum enjoyment while entertaining. For the full spa experience, consider a fireplace with views from both the master bedroom and bathroom.

Modern Flame

Contemporary linear flame gas fireplaces are making their way into homes of varying design style and age. A modern flame with major appeal! Linear fireplaces fit into flexible spaces and are easy to maintain with closed glass fronts, remote control handling and simple venting—no need for messy firewood or a masonry chimney. High-quality units are proving big on ambiance and low on maintenance, a sure ticket to timeless in the design world.

Big Looks

Arguably the most stately feature in the house, fireplace design popularly stretches from floor to ceiling—sometimes spanning multiple stories. This is a timeless design approach that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Fireplaces pack a lot of punch and often decide the design flow of the room and sometimes even the home. All the more reason to invest in your fireplace.

Built-In Vibes

Fireplace design often incorporates more than the hearth, fire box, and chimney alone. Working with a skilled designer can ensure a customized look that is the perfect fit. Carpenter contracted built-in cabinetry, wood storage nooks, and display shelving are all options to consider. If your project budget doesn’t allow for custom carpentry, an experienced designer can help you achieve built-in looks with specified furniture. A clever arrangement of curated furnishings can give the same vibes as more costly carpentry work.

Your fireplace install can include a full wall of functional design, sometimes even media hookups if electronics like television will share the same space. Consider the long-term intended use of this focal point in the room and be intentional when designing built-in fireplace surrounds.

Style that Sustains

Simple lines and subtle style offer timeless appeal when it comes to material selection and trim details. Chalky stacked stones, neutral subway tiles, white-painted brick, farmhouse shiplap, matte stuccos and natural wood mantels remain ever popular building materials. Incorporating a space above the mantle for a classic wallpaper and rotating statement art is another fun way to keep fireplace designs fresh. Minimal floor-level hearths and elevated flat hearth-less fireplace fronts are perennial trends too.

Everything Home’s Holistic Design Approach

Holistic Design Approach featured image

To transform and inspire is the core focus of the EHD brand. Our goal is to design resourceful luxe living that brings ultimate satisfaction, not just in look but in feel.

It is important to choose a designer that echoes your favorite Pins and Likes, and also one that thinks holistically. A good design experience goes beyond agreeing on a paint color or textile choice, it fully taps into both a home’s potential and the client’s emotions — transforming a space into one that evokes the best self.

A place for contemplation or conversation

The roots of our holistic Satisfaction by Design approach:

Design Inquiry

Successful space transformation starts with a design interview session, which we have built into our initial working consultation. We use key questions and observations to better understand our client’s unique lifestyle, ambitions, style preferences and the home solutions they are seeking. This helps us to determine and explore a range of design possibilities with an end goal of creating the most enhanced living opportunity a space can provide for the proposed budget. By taking time to understand each client individually, we are committed to designing very personal intentional spaces.

Bringing the elements together

Holistic Visioning

Our holistic visioning process leads to impressive transformations. Extensive design experience has shown us that whether you’re renovating one room or a whole house, you must consider all of the opportunities present. Our designers are pros in uncovering unseen potential. By thinking comprehensively, you can both avoid missteps and maximize design impact from the start. The rooms within a house are intimately interconnected, with each space building on and influencing the other—we feel a design plan should be equally holistic.

Innovation with a dash of tradition

Food For Your Mood

As humans, our environment is perhaps the best “food” for our mood. When surrounded by chaos we often feel confused and stressed. Alternatively, when our environment is orderly and inspiring we are much more likely to feel energized. Thoughtful space design matters to our mood, well-being, and coincidently our productivity. That’s why, ”How do you want the space to feel when we’re done?”, is one of the most important questions we ask our clients because it is really what matters most.

Whether our client opts for DIY design installation or contracts full design implementation, all benefit from our holistic Satisfaction by Design approach. It’s a proven recipe for design success and we can’t wait to share it with you. Contact us to set up your initial consultation!

How COVID-19 Could Influence The Future of Home Design

How COVID-19 Could Influence The Future of Home Design

In the midst of this pandemic, we’re already seeing some lasting impressions that COVID-19 is having on home design. Spending months mostly at home provides ample time to reassess habits around the house. With a recent spotlight on healthy living, remote work, and homeschooling, one thing is evident—the value of function has never been greater in home design. Making the most of our space at home has become essential to navigating the new normal.

Below are 10 pandemic-related trends popping up in home design that we believe could be here to stay:

#1 Make Room for Mudrooms

Mudrooms make life easier and that’s been especially evident during this pandemic. They work as a designated “drop zone” directly inside the door to stash bags, hang masks, kick off shoes, shed clothing, and wash hands before entering the main living spaces. Some key features include a bench with wall hooks, shoe rack, laundry basket and hand sink. Mudrooms are conveniently planned near the garage (or most-used entrance) to prevent trailing muddy messes and germs throughout the home.

#2 Touchless Faucets

COVID-19 or not, hands-free is the way to be! Touchless faucets are easy to use for people of all ages and eliminate contamination on surfaces. Automated faucets are becoming a popular choice in both kitchens and baths in that they prevent water from being left on while keeping hands germ-free.

#3 Home Offices That Work

It only takes one virtual meeting with children running through the background or the dog barking ferociously at parcel delivery to realize a designated work space is a good idea. A quiet, connected and inspiring home office provides a productive atmosphere for achieving quality work at home—which is seemingly here to stay. A professional backdrop for live video conferencing is a nice touch too.

#4 Emphasis on Outdoor Living

The great outdoors, now more than ever! With an emphasis on outdoor gatherings this year, homeowners are spending more time enjoying their patios, porches, lawns, and gardens. An investment in outdoor living (covered porches, outdoor fireplaces, grilling kitchens, pools, hot tubs, and outdoor televisions) as an extension of indoor spaces is on the rise.

#5 Space for Fitness

With restrictions and limited capacity at gyms and fitness studios, virtual workouts are increasingly popular in an effort to maintain health and wellness. Setting up a designated workout space in the home, often in a spare bedroom or basement, encourages an ongoing commitment to fitness.

#6 Private Guest Areas

When hosting out-of-town guests, separate guest zones are a wonderful way to provide space and privacy for your guests and yourself.  It allows guests to forego crowded hotels while still having their own dedicated space when they are in town.

Ideally, a guest suite includes a spacious bedroom and a full bath. If room allows, a kitchenette is an appreciated addition. This is particularly helpful if you are caring for an ill family member who needs to stay quarantined from the rest of the family.

#7 Air Purification Systems

Whole house air purification systems are a new consideration for many homeowners. The idea of cleaning air of particulates and pathogens is especially intriguing during the COVID-19 pandemic, however air purification has a long standing history of reducing allergen and asthma triggers.

#8 Kid’s Study Space

Homeschooling is new for many families, however homework is not. Whether for distance learning or for after-school assignments, kids benefit from having a dedicated study space. Dens, lofts, cubbies and corners with a desk, chair, storage and internet connection are all better options than dodging dinner time while working at the kitchen table.

#9 “Almost” Open Concept

Open floor plans are definitely desirable, but so is a little quiet time—especially in quarantine. A mixture of open space and private space ( by walls or room separators) is a popular design conversation at this time as families balance togetherness and a need for alone time.

#10 Washable Fabrics

Wash, rinse, dry…repeat, repeat, repeat.  Sanitizing is an important step in promoting a healthy home during a COVID-19 pandemic or otherwise. Washable fabrics on furniture, drapery, bedding, pillows, rugs, etc. have become an important consideration (and sometimes a deal-breaker!) in making safe style selections. Washable fabrics provide additional opportunities to keep things extra clean at home.

Location is the foundation of a highly productive office space. First floor, second floor, basement, loft, shared room — finding the perfect location takes some soul-searching. Think about what environment will help you to bring your best. Find a location that satisfies your preferences.

Consider your wants and wishes before you stake claim and declare an office location. Is a location near an exterior door important for welcoming outside guests? Do you like to be near the action or would you prefer the solitude of a quiet, remote lower level space? Are you energized by natural light pouring in through big windows or is artificial light okay? Do you need a physical barrier like a wall or door to focus, or is a multi-use space suitable for you?

Classic Components

Anchor components such as an area rug to soften sound, a flat-surface desk, a comfortable desk chair, shelving and concealed storage are usually considered necessities when designing a typical office space.

There are various desk options to explore from traditional sitting to elevated standing desks. Appropriate desk size usually depends on space available and intended use. Multi and large monitor set-ups will require more space than a laptop of course. You may also need extra chairs if you accommodate visiting clients.

Tech Considerations

Connectivity is critical in the home office. Wi-fi coverage is a must! Plan ample electrical outlets to accommodate printers, monitors, and chargers. Depending on your design, floor outlets may be necessary to avoid unsightly exposed floor cords which can create tripping hazards. Make sure a secured network is available if you’ll do any confidential work in your home office.

Be Inspired

Home offices are very personalized spaces. They provide the perfect opportunity to include elements that inspire your brightest work. The color palette alone can set a strong tone for your day—from relaxed to energizing.

Set the mood for success by displaying mantras, awards, and accomplishments. Surround yourself in things that make you smile like curated collections and treasured memorabilia. When in doubt, art and live plants are proven feel-good furnishings for the home office.

Flexible Spaces

Lofts, mud rooms, and guest bedrooms all have something in common — they are a perfect place for a “pocket office”. Dual-function is more fashionable than ever in interior design because people are increasingly interested in becoming super stewards of their floor plan.

Fold-up Murphy beds and convertible furniture have come a long way allowing guest bedrooms to quickly flip into flexible office spaces. Large mud rooms are often the hub of the home, located near garage entrances and kitchens, easily accommodating mail baskets, phone charges, and wall calendars. Hard-working adaptable spaces like these make for some unique home offices.

Interior Design Trends: Relaxed Interiors

Relaxed Interiors

Light, airy, lived-in, comfortable and casual are some of today’s popular home design and decor buzz words. Who doesn’t love a room that looks good and feels good? With life becoming increasingly more fast-paced and tech driven, a calm nature-inspired environment at home is more essential than ever. Relaxed interiors help us unplug, unwind, relieve stress and recharge.

We’re thrilled to see nature and wellness lead these home design trends:

Feel Good Fabrics

That feeling of your favorite tee shirt, you know the one! It feels good right? And it makes you feel good too! That’s how home should feel, like your favorite tee shirt. Feel good fabrics can be comfortable and durable—cotton and linen top our preferred list for furniture, drapery, and accessories. Crisp muted color choices and subtle pinstriping patterns are some of our favorite picks for a relaxed, classic look. Bonus points for washable, because life happens!

Natural Textures

Layers of natural texture in a room make a space feel organic and approachable. Show rooms are looking more lived in than ever, because honest is the style — and one we are totally embracing! Metal, glass, stone, leather, and wood are all fun natural layering textures. Light wood flooring and furnishings are back in the spotlight again too, and more stunning than ever! Woven baskets and live plants are also filling homes and hearts.

Collected Elements

Modern meets primitive is a beautiful thing! A combination of collected elements all mindfully mingled together can tell a unique multi-generational story. A collected room is timeless and ultimately soothing because it just feels easy. Think hand-hewn waterfall tables, oversized white pottery vases, wicker dome lampshades…and whatever else speaks to your soul.

Recycled and Repurposed

Repurposing makes earth-sense and it’s on trend too. However, cost should not be the motivating factor when deciding to repurpose furnishings—sometimes it can actually cost more to reupholster or professionally restore an heirloom. Sentiment makes it worth it though.

Multi-Functional

It is hard to pass up a 2-for-1 deal! Especially if it means you don’t have to move room-to-room to complete individual tasks. Multi-functional design utilizes space with supreme efficiency to help fulfill maximum purpose. Some common multi-use trends that are popping up around home include —beverage bars in the kitchen, built-in wall storage in the living room, enlarged mudrooms with craft space, office desk nooks and an open floor plan between kitchen and dining spaces especially.
