Open Design With Defined Spaces Brings New Possibilities To Greenwood Home

The Project

Looking to open their congested interior and bring more connection between spaces, Greenwood homeowners turned to the expert designers at Everything Home. They wanted an open yet cozy feel with views of a beautiful backyard. As a home builder, the client knew he could remove walls to create a large, open area. The rest of the design was up to Everything Home. See how tight quarters with segmented spaces transformed into a dazzling dream home perfect for entertaining.

The Process

In a sense, this project was a designer’s dream as the client gave our team creative license. In addition to providing the connectivity and coziness they desired, one of our goals – as it is on all projects – is to make every space usable. Beyond that, we strive to create spaces people want to be in. Here are some of the key aspects of the design:

  • Instead of having two dining spaces, a large island featuring a quartzite countertop and seating was implemented to replace one, which improved usability and opened up the space.
  • A formal china cabinet was replaced with a built-in hutch serving as a coffee and beverage center. It’s a traditional yet modern furnishing that serves as a working space instead of just a pretty cabinet.
  • A sectional facing away from the kitchen creates coziness in the living room and the illusion of a hallway. There’s a sense of having separate rooms.
  • A combination fireplace and entertainment center provided a focal point for the living area and balanced the kitchen’s new features.
  • We accommodated the client’s request to use hickory and implemented this distinctive wood grain throughout the home in cabinets, built-ins, and other elements.
  • While the main living space remained mostly neutral, we added color to some auxiliary rooms. The new cabinets of the laundry/mudroom are a stunning nautical blue. Repeated wood elements tie the design together and flow nicely into the powder room.

Before starting this remodel, 3D renderings were essential to help the clients see past their existing space and consider what it could become. In the end, they were thrilled with the results.

The Results

The space perfectly captured the feel of having different rooms in one large space. Areas like the kitchen, living room, dining room, and foyer are clearly defined. The design worked perfectly for the family, eliminating traffic issues when entertaining. Traditional wood elements blend beautifully with modern light fixtures and a light, bright kitchen.
