Function And Style Blend Beautifully In Accessible Indianapolis Bathroom

The Project

A married couple wanted a beautiful yet accessible space to accommodate a wheelchair. A previous contractor wasn’t able to meet their needs and left them with a bathroom that was impossible for someone in a wheelchair to access without help. In addition, the sinks didn’t drain, and there were cracks in the tile floor. This Indianapolis bathroom remodel needed reviving, and Everything Home was up to the challenge.

The Process

The focus was on function, but it was still important to create a visually pleasing bathroom. Everything Home set out to create a space the homeowner in a wheelchair could access independently. Meeting ADA requirements within an older home and in a small space was one of the challenges. Features like countertops, plumbing fixtures, and towel bars needed to be set at the perfect height. See how Everything Home made it happen.

    • Implementing a seamless threshold gives the client access to the bathroom without assistance. The shower also features a zero threshold for ease of use.
    • Lower countertops with sinks closer to the front improve function. Towel bars, electrical outlets, and storage areas are more accessible.
    • Stylish, textured subway tile covers the shower walls and extends toward the stunning quartz countertops as wainscoting.
    • A custom, Amish maple cabinet separates a double vanity. Oval mirrors hang from the ceiling and in front of the windows on both sides. This solution saves space while still allowing plenty of light.
    • Floating shelving in a previously unused area adds storage that is easily reachable from a wheelchair.
    • Plumbing repairs fix the drainage issue, and a lower toilet with grab bars on both sides facilitates use.

While the design focused on function, there are beautiful design elements, including the custom woodworking and distinctive tile on the walls and flooring. This bright, pleasant space has a spa-like feel that is easy to access and enjoy.

    The Results

Remodeling the space to meet ADA standards improved functionality and allowed for greater independence. The clients were extremely happy with the final results. Everything Home helped make life easier for the client and designed a space they enjoyed so much that they plan to use it as a model for a second bathroom.
