This is My Happy Place: A Bold Home Transformation

A renovation that radiates smiles in every room—fun colors, prints, and patterns throughout.

Our client was looking for a relaxed joy-filled place to return home to after a long day’s work. This beautiful country property provided plenty of natural respite, but the dated house design was in need of renovation to liven things up and meet its full space potential. Our team was able to fully renovate this home within the existing four walls to provide an elevated design filled with fun and function. We were also able to highlight some of our client’s favorite art pieces and existing furnishings for a unique design full of personality.

First Floor Plan - After Renovation

Design Process

From the start our design goal was clear, to achieve maximum space utilization, and luckily there was plenty of opportunity in this home’s existing footprint to do so! After discussing likes and needs with our client, we took a center seat in the living room to get started. Yep, we literally sat down on the floor and got to work surveying the space quietly from the bottom up. There we started to envision all the possibilities—identifying walls that could come down to open up living space, walls that could go up to privatize personal space, ways to increase natural light, and opportunities to relocate rooms and reallocate underused space. Before leaving we had a quick draft down on paper.

Our team went on to provide design vision, material selection, product sourcing, and staging of furnishings. Additionally, we were engaged through construction as client advocates and design support to our builder partner.

Design Concept

What is hard to see in the after photos alone is just how much space swapping went into this transformation—check out the before and after floor plans above for a more detailed look! We are dedicated to using renovation as a tool for ultimate space utilization, this project demonstrates the many possibilities.

Poorly placed zones like the existing laundry room were relocated to create renewed connectivity between the living room and kitchen. A new laundry room was made possible adjacent to the main bedroom hallway by repurposing an oversized dining area. The utility room was also moved to make room for a drop-zone when entering the home, complete with a bench and coat hooks.

Available space from an underused formal living room was also carved out to increase the new kitchen footprint, with the remaining space transitioning to a new office space with french door entry to allow natural light to filter through the kitchen. The walls surrounding the office provided a new welcoming foyer space at the front door too.

Some windows in the home were enlarged to maximize natural light and backyard views. A second double-door entry was also added to the living room to provide more light and flexible access for entering the home.

The master bathroom was increased to accommodate a private toilet room and tile shower while the oversized powder bath next to the living room was minimized lending space for a beverage bar in the kitchen.

The front staircase was reoriented to highlight an open railing, making room for a small nook at the bottom of the stairs for a cozy armchair accent—one of our client’s favorite reused furniture pieces.

Design Features

Charming and full of fun pretty much sums up this happy home’s style! The aqua kitchen cabinetry fit right in along with vintage-inspired patterned tiles in the bath, powder and laundry rooms. For a luxe look, furniture leg features were added to the kitchen island. Shiplap was added to the dining room walls to warm up the space and a footed console sink elevates the kitchen’s eclectic style. As a finishing touch, the client’s own art collection and furniture pieces were incorporated into this colorful design for extra personalization.
