Designing Your Basement To Feel Good and Function Great

Basements allow a lot of opportunity to expand living space in a home. From a simple bar hangout to high-tech theaters, cozy craft corners to kids play spaces, guest bedrooms to expansive in-law suites — with thoughtful design a lot that can be achieved in the lower level of a home.

Consider these design ideas when planning luxe lower levels:

Evaluating Space

To begin designing your basement, visit the space throughout the day to survey natural light when planning use. Select window-less dark corners for theatre rooms and skip the screen glare. Windows are a must, however, if adding a bedroom space; providing sunrise views and most importantly safety. Egress windows (windows large enough to evacuate from in case of an emergency) are required in all bedrooms per local building code.

Lighting Layers

Plan lighting layers to set various moods in the basement. Brighten things up with can lights and track lights as a primary light source. Soften the glow with wall sconces and lamps as secondary lighting. Each type of lighting serves a unique purpose, mix light sources for increased ambiance.

Functional Floors

Basements sometimes take a beating—hosting large gatherings, kids play, sticky bar spills, and messy craft stations. Consider durable flooring like Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) when finishing lower levels. LVP offers a lengthy warranty, a waterproof finish, an easy to replace plank system and is available in warm wood-look tones. Soften the space with synthetic mold and mildew-resistant area rugs. Tile is the least desirable flooring surface for lower levels due to cracking that sometimes occurs when a home settles.

Wall Treatments

Embellish basement walls with consistent treatments to tie the lower level in with the rest of the home. Wainscoting and shiplap add durability, texture, and a finished look to any space. Consider hard-surface washable wall treatments behind bars, in the bath, game room, and play spaces.

Color Inspiration

The basement is traditionally thought of as a colder space, both in sub-surface temperature and overall atmosphere. Select warm color tones and creamy whites to radiate coziness and warmth throughout the lower level. Shy away from bright whites and cool colors that can appear sterile.
